Feeding Cues

Lesson Summary

Being aware of your baby's feeding cues is essential for a smooth feedings and a happy baby. Here are some cues to look out for:

  • Rapid eye movement during sleep (REM)
  • Rooting: Baby turns their head, usually with an open mouth, searching for the nipple
  • Sucking on fingers or hand
  • Tongue and mouth movements
  • Sucking motions while flexing arms and legs

It's recommended to feed your baby before they start crying, as crying is considered a late feeding cue. If your baby is crying and having difficulty latching and settling down, you can try skin-to-skin contact to calm them down and help with the feeding process.
